USP now leads

Don't look now, but the University of Southern Philippines (USP) Baby Panthers have taken the lead in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) high-school basketball.

USP skyrocketed to the top of the standings after a 62-57 upset win over defending champion and erstwhile pacesetter University of the Visayas Baby Lancers last Saturday at the league’s out-of-town tripleheader at the Consolacion Gym.

The Women’s division match also featured the fall of another champion as the USC Lady Warriors pulled off a 48-47 win over the University of Cebu Lady Webmasters, dealing the defending champions their first defeat in five games.

The lone defending champion who remained unscathed were the UV Green Lancers, who cruised to their eighth straight win after drubbing the USP Panthers, 72-51, in the main match.

Fourth-quarter surge

Earvin Ferraren and Jordan Hermosa combined for 33 points for the Baby Panthers, who battled the fancied Baby Lancers point-for-point and eventually vanquished their foes with a big fourth-quarter surge.

The win improved the Baby Panthers’ mark to a field-best 7-3 while the Lancers dropped to 6-4.

The Green Lancers, on the other hand, are on a pleasure cruise.

Jayford Rodriguez topscored with 18 points, while Morsie Akad added 10 for the Green Lancers, who dominated the match from beginning to end.

With its stonewall defense doing most of the damage, the Green Lancers erected a 14-point first-quarter lead, 19-5, and withstood several comeback attempts by USP in the succeeding periods before nailing the win.
