Jaguars set fire to semis hopes with 2-pt. victory

For the most part of the 2005 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) season, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars have been downright mysterious – brilliant one game, disappointing the next.

They were somewhere in between Sunday night, but still came away with a big win.

With their backs against the wall, the Jaguars still managed to pull off a 94-92 victory over the gritty Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildcats at the University of San Carlos Gym.

Junior game

In the other games of the tripleheader, the University of Cebu Junior Webmasters got the scare of their lives before posting a 62-57 escape win over the Don Bosco College (DBC) Greywolves, while the CIT Wildkittens massacred the USC Baby Warriors, 99-52.

Herbert Arellano and Luke Justiniani combined for 44 points for the Jaguars, who improved to 3-6 and kept their hopes alive as the elimination round heads to its last few stages.

The Wildcats dropped to 1-6, good for last in the seven-team Collegiate division.

The Jaguars, finalists last year, started slow, trailing 15-23 after a first quarter where they engaged in a scrappy, full-court game with the Wildcats.

In the second period, the Jaguars got accustomed to the pace and posted a 43-40 halftime lead.

Arellano, who finished with a game-high 25 points, including three 3-point bombs, and Justiniani (19 points, two 3-pointers) took over in the final period and lugged the Jaguars to victory.
