Maritime players join hands in port clean-up
Maritime industry players will take a day off during the Cebu 2005 National Maritime Week to clean the Port of Cebu and parts of the Mactan Channel in a spirit of bayanihan, their belated observance of the recent 20th International Cleanup Day.
An opening program will kick-off the whole-morning activity on Oct. 1at 7:30 a.m. inside the Stella Maris Center of the Apostleship of the Sea at Pier 4 before everyone will be dispatched in six groups to cover Piers 1 to 6 with the shipping companies taking the lead at their primary berthing areas, he said.
The Aboitiz Transport System (ATS), a major sponsor of the week, will take care of the areas where SuperFerry, SuperCat and Cebu Ferries operate; so do Sulpicio Lines, Jones Carrier and Lite Shipping, which are all minor sponsors.
The University of Cebu (UC) has also committed the participation of some 150 students in the clean-up activity as part of their accomplishment of their Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) requirement.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will also deploy rubber boats that will tread the harbor waters to sweep floating trash and will dispatch some 25 divers to gat-her underwater junks, said Cmdr. Lemuel Alquiza, PCG Cebu deputy commander.
The Maritime Week will start on Sept. 24 with all ships docked at the Port of Cebu simultaneously- blowing their horns at 7 a.m. A motorcade will follow, then the formal opening program at the Cebu Ports Authority (CPA) grounds sponsored by the Philippine Classification Register, Inc.
The 1st Maritime Exhibit and Trade Fair will formally open by 3 p.m. on the same day at the SM City Cebu Atrium, in cooperation with Phil-Asia Maritime Services and Training Center.
