Mayor opposes postponement of SK, bry. polls

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeñs is opposed to the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to October 2007, saying it runs counter to the principle of democracy.

Osmeña said barangay and youth leaders would serve their constituents better if they win an election since they will be given a mandate by the people.

With the postponement of the elections, the term of the elected barangay and SK officials will be extended by another two years.

“I believe in democracy, I believe in an election, but I don’t believe in fooling around and extending the elections, I really don’t,” Osmeña told a news conference yesterday.

The mayor believes it is negative to defer an election since it is not democratic.

“The disadvantage is nothing serious, really, but we should not get into the habit of postponing elections because it erodes the significance of democratic processes. Are you willing to sacrifice democracy just so we can save money?

At the least it’s in bad taste, there’s something wrong here,” added Osmeña.

Even if he does not agree with the postponement, Osmeña said he has no choice but to adjust to the schedule set by Congress.

The Senate and House of Representatives bicameral conference committee arrived at a compromise schedule of the elections on the last Monday of October 2007.

If Congress wants to cut down on election expenses, Osmeña said it should reduce the number of elective positions instead of postponing the polls. (LCR)
