Money transfer firm loses P30T in holdup
Two armed men robbed a money transfer firm in Lapu-Lapu City and ran off with P30,000 from the cashier’s table yesterday late afternoon.
The firm’s lone security guard was on leave. The cashier was alone in the office, since their auditor and manager went home ahead of her.
The heist on the Western Union branch on B.M. Dimataga St., Barangay Poblacion took less than 10 minutes.
The robbers casually boarded a passenger van at a nearby terminal.
Cashier Sulpicia Mah, 53, was talking with a man about a transfer fee when the he suddenly pointed a .45 pistol at her.
He demanded for the money from her table. The man’s companion also pointed a .38 revolver at her, threatening to shoot her if she won’t follow their orders.
The firm is a few meters from the public market. Some people in the area said they saw two men both in white shirts go out of the Western Union office, but they didn’t suspect anything because they were calm.
Clint Baguio, a police radio operator, said the robbery took place at 5:50 p.m. and was reported to them 15 minutes later.
Witnesses said the two robbers casually walked towards the van-for-hire terminal some 20 meters from the crime scene and boarded the van going to Mandaue City.
Police in Mandaue City set up a checkpoint on A. Cortes Ave. near the approach of the old Mactan-Mandaue Bridge, after Baguio radioed them that the robbers were aboard the van.
The van was intercepted but the robbers were no longer inside.
Theft and robbery investigator PO1 Kent Lisen said Mah was still in shock when they asked her about the robbery.
He said Mah estimated the loss at no more than P30,000, including a few dollar bills. (AIV)
