SHS-J, Don Bosco out to challenge UC By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Correspondent
The University of Cebu is making the Milo Little Olympics its personal playground. The way things are going, it won’t be long before Don Bosco Technological College and Sacred Heart School-Jesuit will give them a run for their money.
The UC Webmasters received P50,000 for winning their ninth straight Secondary title with a medal haul of 40-23-13,during the awarding ceremonies yesterday at the Grand Convention Center.
Elementary
SHS-J was seventh with a 3-3-4 haul, and Don Bosco eighth at 3-1-1.
In the Elementary division, SHS-J took the overall title with a 12-5-6 gold-medal haul with Talamban Elementary School second at 7-4-6.
“We are very happy that we did very well and we will continue to build up our athletic program and we can do better in the high-school contest,” said SHS-J director Fr. Ernesto Javier, SJ, who came to the awards with Physical Education head Adela Mae Martinez.
“We will probably focus more on athletics next year and maybe gymnastics,” Javier said.
This year, SHS-J’s Timothy Chu won the long jump, high jump and 200m run.
Martinez said SHS-J fielded teams in all events except sepak takraw, volleyball, and gymnastics. For next year, they eye to put up a volleyball team aside from gymnastics.
“We are not a very big school. We only have over 1,000 students,” Javier said. “And you have to understand, for a student to continue with his athletic program he must do well academically.”
For his part, Don Bosco athletic director Bro. Mari Aberasturi is also eyeing gymnastics and athletics next year.
Taekwondo
“We have Claudith Lapiña with us, so maybe we can ask her to help us,” Aberasturi said. Lapiña played for the University of Southern Philippines gymnastics team.
“Our taekwondo team only started last summer and we won two golds in High School and two in Elementary, while we won both Elementary and High School football,” Aberasturi said.
Also yesterday, Nestle Philippines executive Pat Gocong highlighted the importance of fair play in his speech.
“Winning is not only about getting the gold but fighting fair and square and persevering. This is are character-forming traits that is imbibed in Milo values.”
