Undermanned Webmasters lose badly

When the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters showed up at the Lapu-Lapu Sports Complex without Allain Abellanosa last Monday, the University of Southern Philippines (USP) Panthers licked their claws and warmed up their appetites.

Taking full advantage of its crippled foe, the Panthers got off to a scorching start and thoroughly shredded the Webmasters, 81-60, in the main match of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation (Cesafi) out-of-town tripleheader last Tuesday night.

In the other matches, the UC Junior Webmasters posted a 70-58 win over the USP Baby Panthers, while the Don Bosco Technological College Greywolves trampled the USC Baby Warriors, 73-68, in the opening match.

Abellanosa, who is averaging 12.33 points per game this season, and the prime component of the Webmasters’ dreaded pressure defense, was indefinitely suspended by the Cesafi board after his big role in the brawl involving the Webmasters and the USC Warriors last Sept. 11.

Ailing team

The Board is set to decide today on the plight of Abellanosa and USC guard Ahman James Tagalog.

From the very start, the Webmasters had the look of an ailing team.

Besides losing one of its best players in Abellanosa, the team is also mentally bothered over the Cesafi board’s decision on its star guard’s status, and it showed in their on-court performance.

The Webmasters came out flat and got bamboozled, 25-7, in the first quarter and never recovered from that point on.

USP swingmen Elvis Labares and Glenn Pendang combined for 37 points for the Panthers, who exacted revenge on the Webmasters in the offing.

In their previous encounter, Abellanosa torched the Panthers with 21 points and lugged the Webmasters to a 106-95 win at the USP Gym last Aug. 25.
