Cebu pugs fail in Bohol

Cebuano boxers had a terrible start in the first round of the 19th Visayas Inter-City Developmental Amateur Boxing Championship at the Island City Mall in Tagbilaran City.

But while the Cebuanos found it hard to turn the heat up, the Tagbilaran City boxers showed much improvement as two Boholanos moved into the next round with impressive wins.

Tagbilaran’s Ginno Cabugngon shamed Loren Nacor of Talisay City following a referee-stopped contest-outclass (RSC-O) win in 20 seconds of the second round in the antweight division (32 kilograms) eliminations.

Aside from Nacor, Team Cebu City’s (TCC) Erwin San Roque also bade goodbye to his medal hopes as he lost to Jason Intia of Maasin City in a 5-0 shutout, also in the antweight category.

Mandaue City’s Jefferson Barriga was also eliminated after losing to Daryl Ramos of Maasin City in another 5-0 beating in the 34kg division.

With five teams the 11-squad competition and the opening of the ALA Gym in Brgy. Taloto, Tagbilaran, the Boholanos look to be catching up with Cebu.

Tagbilaran’s Joshua Udtohan (36kg) pleased the hometown crowd with an RSC-O win at the 50-second mark of the fourth round over Junnie Tabanao of Cadiz City.

There was a bright spot for the Cebuanos as Jomarie Yuson of Mandaue City defeated Fernando Alfar of Cadiz City, 5-0, in the 39kg elimination round, while TCC’s Jestoni Borres beat Joseph Cerojos of Talibon, Bohol, 4-1, in the paperweight (42kg) division.

At press time, Dario Luga of Mandaue City (45kg), Jonas Miñoza of TCC (45kg) and Marlon Arrisga of the host team Tagbilaran City were still trading mitts with separate opponents. (RCM)
