Cesafi has another ugly incident to resolve
After meting out season-long suspensions on those who instigated the brawl between the University of Cebu and University of San Carlos (see separate story), the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. has another problem to handle, and this time its volleyball.
Don Bosco Technological College (DBTC) high-school coach Maxel Semblante said that one of his players got rough treatment from a University of Southern Philippines (USP) coach, while assistant coach Kent Caserial got kicked in a scuffle by an assistant coach from the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R).
Also, a drunk parent allegedly kept on heckling the DBTC players forcing them to seek assistance from the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat).
Threat
Both incidents happened last Sunday during the championship match at the Aznar Coliseum, where DBTC lost to USJ-R, 25-19, 16-25, 23-25. Earlier in the day, DBTC defeated USP, 14-25, 26-24, 26-24.
Semblante said he saw the USP coach press his finger on Daryl Recalde’s forehead and told him, “Karun dayun, pwede taka dungabun (I can stab you now if I want to).”
“I saw him so I approached him and asked why he did that and he said that one of his (USP coach) players was provoked by Recalde to a fight,” Semblante said during an interview with Sun.Star Cebu. “He then called out to my player and told him that the father of the boy (whom Recalde provoked) was coming.”
Intoxicated
Semblante also said that the USP coach reeked of liquor: “Murag naka-inum man to siya (I think he had taken an alcoholic drink).”
The USP player’s father did arrive, allegedly intoxicated, Semblante said, and asked for Recalde.
“Ipakita nako niya kung unsa-un nako siya (I’ll show him what I can do to him),” Semblante heard the boy’s father say.
Semblante said he approached the father and apologized: “Although my players denied doing it, I apologized to avoid further conflict.”
However it didn’t end there, as during the DBTC-University of San Jose-Recoletos final, the USP player’s father was standing near the court and kept on heckling and a fight nearly broke out after the first set, this time involving Caserial, Recalde and the assistant coach of USJ-R.
“He (USJ-R assistant coach) said that Recalde bumped him when we changed courts and I saw that he was about to punch him so I pulled Recalde aside and he kicked me,” Caserial said.
Semblante said he could have asked for a postponement of the game but instead decided to go on with it after they decided to ask for help from the Swat.
“They kept quiet when the police came,” said Caserial of the hecklers.
The two also hit the alleged inaction of volleyball tournament manager Thelma Datig, who they said failed to report the incident to the Cesafi board.
“We asked her to tell the drunk parent to leave but she didn’t,” they said.
Sun.Star Cebu’s call to Datig’s cell phone went unanswered last night.
The two coaches are currently preparing their affidavits for legal action against the USP coach and the parent, while Don Bosco athletic director Bro. Mari Aberasturi will file a complaint with the Cesafi board.
“They should be sanctioned, salot sila sa (they’re a bane to) volleyball,” Semblante said.
