As expected, the University of Cebu Webmasters wasted no time in stamping their dominance in both the Collegiate and Secondary levels as the 2005 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) athletics competition kicked off yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The Webmasters started their campaign in the Collegiate division by hauling a total of 10 golds, 11 silvers and three bronze medals to top the standings of the five-school event.

Dominant

The Baby Webmasters, for their part, were even more dominant as they plucked a total of 15 golds, 12 silvers and two bronze medals with only the University of Southern Philippines (USP) Baby Panthers standing on their way.

Janice Ann Bautista led the golden harvest of the Webmasters in the Collegiate division, bagging two golds after topping the Women’s 100m hurdles in 17.02 seconds and the 400m hurdles in one minute and 13.70 seconds.

Clyde Calijan also gave UC a gold in Men’s 400m hurdles with his clocking of 1:00.05, while the other golds were from Michael Ken Lopez in 800m run (2:03.20), Christy Sevilleno in 800m (2:23.91), Jeppy Lumungsod in 5km walk (31 minutes and 21.91 seconds), Marlonne Sabellon in Men’s high jump (1.70 meters) and Edward Encontro in Men’s triple jump (13.10 meters).

Jaguars

The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars secured the second spot by snaring six golds to go along with their three silvers and seven bronze medals, while USP secured third place with a 3-3-4 gold-silver-bronze tally.

The Jaguars were headed by Loida Abarquez, Angelica Lado and Jefferson Querubin, who garnered two golds each.

Lado topped the Women’s shot put (9.81 meters) and discus throw (29.68 meters), while Querubin ruled the Men’s shot put (11.41 meters) and discus throw (28.59 meters). Abarquez secured the gold medals in the Women’s high jump (1.40 meters) and triple jump (10.69 meters).

USP, on the other hand, got its gold medals from Mary Rose Arman in Women’s 3,000m (12:56.15), Mendel Lopez in Men’s 10,000m (35:29.05) and Harren Melendez in Men’s 110m hurdles (16.29 seconds).

Secondary winners

The only other school that won a gold in the College division was Southwestern University courtesy of Eden Dampios in Men’s 3km walk in 22 minutes and 03.89 seconds.

In the Secondary division, UC’s gold-medal winners were Stephanie Sanico (Girls discus throw and shot put), Anselmo Esgana (Boys high jump and triple jump), Marjorie Ann Sy (Girls high jump and 400m hurdles), Irin Balauran (Girls triple jump), Ariel Cubcuban (110m hurdles and 400m hurdles), Almira Gay Sadaya (100m hurdles), Sheena Gacayan (3,000m), Ken Werner Villaruel (800m), Annabel Nuñez (800m), Benedict Ygot (Boys 200m) and Lera dela Calzada (Girls 200m).

USP’s twin golds on opening day were from Jay Dario (Boys discus throw) and Junrey Navaja (Boys shot put).
