Caib to tap students in fight against porn

The Cebu City Anti-Indecency Board (Caib) will tap students to fight pornography.

It will also gather owners of massage parlors and KTV bars and let them sign a manifesto as part of the celebration of September as anti-indecency month. They will be given copies of a city ordinance on pornography.

Phillip Zapra, Caib secretary, said the owners can no longer claim ignorance of the law once they are caught violating the ordinance.

In a symposium at the Zapatera Elementary School gym yesterday morning, Caib officials warned night high school students against the dangers of pornography.

Similar symposia were held the past weeks for night high school students in Abellana National School, Mabolo Elementary School, Cebu City National Science High School, and Don Vicente Rama Elementary School.

Caib initially planned to torch pornographic materials, but thought against it at the last minute because the students might see lewd photos during the activity.

Zapra said they targeted night high schools because students are the most vulnerable to pornographic influence.

Aside from the fact that they study at night, high school students are in the adolescent stage, where emotional, psychological and physical changes take place and they are curious about many things.

Zapra said the students were encouraged to report newspaper stands and other businesses selling lewd materials. They were also asked to campaign against pornography by warning classmates and family members.

Zapra said exposure and subsequent addiction to smut distracts students from school. (RHM)
