Name a street after Orlacsan

The Cebu News Workers Foundation (Cenewof) has proposed the naming of a street in Mandaue City in honor of the late sports editor Orlando C. Sanchez.

The proposal was approved on mass motion by the Cenewof board of trustees in a board meeting last Sept. 16 at the MBF Cebu Press Center.

Mandaue City Councilor Carlo Pontico Fortuna, majority floor leader, said the Cenewof request will be discussed in the next council session.

Sanchez, popularly known as Orlacsan, a native of Mandaue City, was the most well-known sports personality in Cebu during his time. He was sports editor of The Freeman from 1965 to 1982 and sports editor of Sun.Star Cebu (then called Sun.Star Daily) from Nov. 25, 1982 until his death in 1994.

Icon

Cenewof said Sanchez helped elevate sports coverage and the sports section of local newspapers to higher standards of creativity and depth.

He was among those who initiated the annual Cebu Sports Awards and the Cebu Hall of Fame, which honored him after his death as a sports icon himself.

The Cebu Sports Hall of Fame lauds his sports journalism work as well as his efforts to encourage young sports talents and prod veteran athletes to improve sklls and set higher goals for themselves and for Cebu.

The proposed Orlacsan St. is a still unnamed street that extends on the Barangay Alang-Alang side from M. Sanchez St.

If approved by the Mandaue City Council, Orlacsan St. will be the fourth street named after journalists under Cenewof’s initiative.

Pachico A. Seares, Cenewof trustee and in-charge of the continuing project, identified the three streets as Concepcion G. Briones St., Pedro D. Calomarde St., and Jose Ma. del Mar St., all in Cebu City. Orlacsan St. will be the first in Mandaue City.

“These journalists who helped make what Cebu journalism is today, vibrant and dynamic, deserve the honor, even if it comes only after their lifetime,” Seares said.
