RP predicts 171 golds By Frank C. Calapre Sun.Star Correspondent
MANILA – Team Philippines can get as many as 171 golds, which should be enough to wrap up its first-ever overall crown in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games on Nov. 27 to Dec. 5.
Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (PhilSoc) technical committee chairman Harry Angping said that the assessment was based on the forecast made by the 40 national sports association heads during the Philippine Olympic Committee executive meeting on Wednesday.
Honest projection
“A high of 171 golds and a low of 109,” said Angping yesterday during the weekly Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines Forum at the Kamayan Restaurant in Padre Faura, Malate. “This was the honest-to-goodness projection given by the NSA heads during our POC executive meeting the other day.”
He said some NSAs like table tennis, petanque and squash admitted they have little chance to win golds, but had good chances securing silvers and bronzes in the 10-day competition.
“They were honest in their assessment,” said Angping, also a board of director of the POC headed by former Rep. Jose Cojuangco.
And with basketball doubtful, the SEA Games may be staged with only a total of 39 sports disciplines and 339 events.
The country’s best finish so far in the biennial meet was a close second to Indonesia in the Manila SEA Games in 1991, where we lost by a lone gold, 91-90.
Former host Vietnam was overall champion when it collected 150 golds in 2003, followed by Thailand with 87 and Indonesia with 53, while the Philippines settled for fourth with 43 golds.
Best hope
Angping, also the softball association of the Philippines president said athletics remain the best hope for gold by predicting 12 to 15 golds; wushu gave a high of 12 and a low of 10; cycling 10; shooting 12; taekwondo 12; karatedo 9.
Other medal hopefuls are bowling, billiards, boxing, muay-thai, sepak-takraw, Swimming, archery, arnis, chess, gymnastics, fencing, golf, judo, lawn bowls, pancak-silat, rowing, lawn tennis, wrestling and weighlifting.
