REVIVAL. Our column last Thursday elicited a lot of text reactions from several readers. They were one in stating that there is hope for the eventual revival of the Cebuano/Visayan movie industry; I agree with them. At any rate, due to the lack of space last week, only a few readers’ text views on the subject of reviving the local film industry saw print in this corner. Today, allow me to yield another space for the text views of those who were not accommodated here last week. Read on.

Columnist Chinggay Utzurrum: “What we need in order to revive the Cebuano/Visayan film industry is new blood with sufficient logistics just like Cesar Montano. With his Panaghoy sa Suba, Cesar, although a Boholano, has transported Cebu and the rest of the Visayas to international cinema.”

Rev. Fr. Jun Gutierrez of Talamban parish: “I was in Cebuano/Visayan movies like Bulawan sa Lapok with Dindo Fernando, Tommy Abuel and Alicia Alonzo. In that particular movie, I was that kid who recited May Unggoy Kong Gamay. My second film was Paypay Placid where I was with several other children in a street parade scene.”

Banker Bessie Espina-Villamor: “We have an abundance of talents here. On my part, I had the privilege of doing a Cebuano/Visayan film titled Awit sa Damgo which was written and directed by Talyux Bacalso. It was an experience I will cherish for a lifetime.”

* * *

CCTN channel 47’s Marivir Montebon: “Investors should first conduct a market study in order to know people’s preferences. In so doing, Cebuano/Visayan films become relevant in a lucrative business.”

* * *

Stage director-actress/singer Jamna Gicole: “We should have a yearly Cebuano/Visayan film festival in order to draw the interest of the people.”

* * *

Television director Dottie Aznar: “We should all unite and get rid of our trademark crab mentality. The creation of a strong guild of movie producers and directors is a must.”

STAGEPLAY. I bumped into top stage director/playwright Crispin Ramos who is in town for his much-needed respite from his hectic US work schedule. He informed me that he has an ongoing stageplay titled Adunay Usa Ka Sundawo, a 25-minute presentation starred in by Bryan Barbon and Fern Sabondo. Yes, folks, it’s that short a play with only two actors. Rhea Fantonial-Bautista is Fern’s alternate. Crispin also stressed that the Rene Villanueva-written presentation is ideal for campus tours and corporate affairs. “Adunay Usa Ka Sundawo could be likened to a classroom-type play,” Crispin added. He also told me that for next year, he will be doing an English version of this particular stageplay titled There Was a Soldier.

DUBAI. On Wednesday, Sept. 28, local theaters shall start showing Dubai starred in by Aga Muhlach, Claudine Barretto and John Lloyd Cruz. This Star Cinema movie, megged by Rory Quintos, is reputed to offer inspiration and hope as it tells that love is important to one’s aspirations in life and the fulfillment of his dreams. Gary Valenciano sings the movie’s theme song titled Ikaw Lamang, another beautiful Olgie Alcasid composition. Let’s see how Dubai will fare at the tills.

CONCERT. Three of the country’s top performers are coming over to Cebu next month for Voices and Strings, dubbed as the acoustic event of the year. Nina, Paolo Santos and Nyoy Volante have vowed to reminisce the celebrated sounds of the music industry by performing the hits from the past to the present. Voices and Strings, a Creative Freeway presentation, will be on October 8, 7:30 p.m., at Waterfront Hotel in Lahug this city. For ticket reservations, call tel. no. 232-6098.

SINGER. Tomorrow, Tuesday, our weekly television show Sam Enchanted Evening shall feature one of Cebu’s veteran performers as the lone singer. I’d rather keep her identity a secret as of the moment. Just watch our program tomorrow, 8-9 p.m., over CCTN channel 47 or SkyCable 56. It has a replay on Wednesday, 8-9 a.m.

GUESS WHO. This arrogant and aging broadcaster pees on his pants when he coughs hard during his program. He has become the butt of jokes among his fellow broadcasters and technicians. (E-mail:samcost@yahoo.com or text 0915-4992844).
