Alay Lakad likely to hit P1M goal
AT LEAST 190,000 persons joined the Alay Lakad 2005 yesterday and marched from two different points all the way to the Cebu City Sports Center, to raise more than P1 million for out-of-school youth.
The delegates, who started at the Plaza Independencia and the Provincial Capitol, began entering the gates of the sports center at 1:15 p.m. By the time the last group, Alpha Kappa Rho fraternity, entered, it was 3 p.m.
Because there was not much space left in the venue, some groups went home before the program could start.
The participants also endured the scorching heat, although a few minutes of rain offered some relief.
“Touching kaayo kay mas dako ang participation karon. You are showing and demonstrating your support for the out-of-school-youth of Cebu (The participation this year is much bigger),” Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said.
Samson Tiu, the overall chairman of the Alay Lakad Foundation, said the walk was on its 33rd year yesterday.
“Kuyawan ka sa participation karon kay daghan, and every P1 that each of you has donated will have a counterpart of P6 from the Cebu City Government,” Tiu told the participants at the start of the program.
Since there were 190,000 participants, the foundation can expect to raise close to P1.3 million.
For their cash assistance to the foundation, the Lions Club and Kiwanis Club International received plaques of recognition yesterday.
The Cebu City Council had approved a resolution declaring September as Alay Lakad Month. “Kabataan Isulong ang Kinabukasan” is this year’s theme.
City Councilor Gerry Carillo said the number of delegates this year exceeded last year’s participants by over 40,000.
Yesterday’s walk drew participants from public elementary and high schools, private universities, civic organizations, the military’s Central Command, national government agencies, Police Regional Office, City Hall and the Provincial Capitol.
Groups of policemen secured every corner of the parade route.
The affair ended with a “cheerdance” competition that drew different public schools and private universities at 5:30 p.m.
The University of San Carlos and Zapatera Night High School won the first prize of P15,000 for the college and high school categories, respectively.
University of Cebu (college) and Abellana National School (high school) took the second prize of P10,000. AMA Computer College and San Isidro Parish High School landed third and each took P5,000.
All the winners also received plaques. (AIV)
