Boy, 13, stabs mother to prevent beating
By Jovy S. Taghoy
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

FED up with the alleged maltreatment by his mother, a 13-year-old boy fought back and stabbed her yesterday in Sition Silangan Dos, Barangay Tejero, Cebu City.

She survived.

Homicide investigators took the boy into their custody, but will turn him over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) today.

Neighbors said it was not only 13-year-old Rey whom the mother, Linda, maltreated but his two other siblings as well. (The real names of the mother and her children have been withheld to protect the identity of the minors.)

Linda allegedly used a dog chain in beating Rey and his two other siblings. After beating them, the child who she believed erred would be chained inside the house.

Yesterday’s incident started when Linda allegedly scolded Rey after spotting him sniffing rugby together with other teenagers in the port area.

When they reached home at 10:30 a.m., Linda continued scolding Rey while looking for the chain.

Before Linda could hit Rey, the boy ran to the kitchen, got hold of the nine-inch knife, and stabbed Linda in the upper back.

Linda managed to grapple for the knife, until they got outside the house. Upon seeing the scuffle, neighbors intervened.

Tejero barangay tanod Arnold Polot arrested Rey while Linda was brought to the Cebu City Medical Center.

SPO1 Jay Yballe of the Homicide Section told Sun.Star Cebu that they also brought Rey to the hospital for treatment of scratches and minor injuries in the neck.

Linda’s husband is reportedly with the Philippine Navy and is presently detailed in Manila.

Yballe said they would just have treated the alarm as a case of a rugby user stabbing his mother.

But Yballe decided otherwise after the family’s neighbors told him that Rey had been physically abused by his mother.

Yballe said he will coordinate today with the DSWD or the Family Juvenile and Gender Sensitivity Section of the Cebu City Police Office to investigate the allegation.

Yballe said a frustrated parricide charge may be filed against Rey if Linda decides to file a complaint.
