Jaguars finish elims with upset victory By Glenn C. Michelena Sun.Star Correspondent
THE University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars made a dramatic exit by playing the role of spoilers.
Already out of contention in the 2005 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) season, the Jaguars stepped up big in their last game of the season, drubbing the
favored University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 85-71, at the Talisay Gym Saturday night and somehow muddled the picture of the league’s semifinals casting.
In the High-School division game, the University of Southern Philippines (USP) Baby Jaguars defeated the Don Bosco Technical Center (DBTC) Greywolves, 63- 60, while the
USC Baby Warriors posted a 53-51 win over the Baby Jaguars.
Triple-tie
USJ-R’s win puts the Jaguars in a triple-tie with USC and the USP Panthers in the standings with 4-6 marks each.
Despite tying USC and USP in the standings, however, the Jaguars remain out of the semis casting by virtue of the superior tiebreak quotients of USP and USC. The league
is employing the Fiba (International Basketball Federation) format, which recalls the head-to-head records and the winning margins among the tied teams.
This season, USJ-R is 0-2 against the Panthers and 1-1 against the Warriors, whose 16-point (82-66) victory over the Jaguars last Sept. 28 turned out to be a handy
resource in their bid for a semifinals seat.
USJ-R’s win also gave an ounce of hope for the cellar-dwelling Cebu Institute of Technology Wildcats, who have two more games to go at press time. If CIT wins both, it
would leapfrog over USC in the standings and avail of a semis berth.
Tall order
The concept of CIT sweeping its last two games, however, remains a very tall order for the Wildcats, whose last two opponents are powerhouse UC Webmasters and the
mighty UV Lancers, respectively.
Ranulfo Malinao topscored with 19 points for the Jaguars, who also drew 16 from star guard Luke Justiniani and 14 from Lyndon Gudez.
After a tight first half that ended with USJ-R on top by 39-34, the Jaguars managed to erect a outscored the Warriors, 24-13, in the third period, maintaining its lead until the
end of the match.
Pivot Enrico Llanto topscored with a night-high 29 points for the USC Warriors.
