Sun.Star loses first game in Trimedia Olympics
THE Sun.Star Cebu basketball squad’s campaign in the 2005 Trimedia Olympics campaign got off to a rocky start yesterday.
Crippled by the absence of star guard Juvey Veloso, SSC never got on track and suffered a stinging defeat at the hands of Monster Radio, 83-67, in the opening-day games of the 2005 Cebu City Tri-Media Olympics at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.
SSC played catch-up all throughout the match. After an Efren Lonzon bucket trimmed the lead to two, 32-34, Monster Radio went on a 7-0 blitz to end the first half on top by 11, 43-32.
Nosedive
From that point, SSC’s play went on a nosedive and it thoroughly lost its grasp of the game midway in the third period.
Mark Babilonia finished with 22 points for Monster Radio, which also drew 21 points from playmaker Bryan Lo.
Lonzon, on the other hand, led SSC with 17 points, while Riel Mayol and Jun Migallen added 11 apiece.
In the other matches, dyHP trampled the Freeman, 94-75, while SkyCable won by default over Cebu Daily News in the other match of the event, which officially opened today with a glitzy opening ceremony.
Cheerdance
Saving the day for Sun.Star was its cheerdance team.
The movers and the shriekers of the country’s top community paper bagged a first runner-up finish in the cheerdance competition, right behind champion Freeman.
Karla Henry Ginteroy of Freeman was adjudged Best Muse of the event, which was graced by Cebu City Vice Mayor Mike Rama, City Councilors Jack Jakosalem, Pacs Pacaña and Cebu City Sports Center Manager Ricky Ballesteros. (GCM)
