ADB checks Bfar projects

CAGAYAN DE ORO - A joint Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) 10 and Asian Development Bank (ADB) team assessed and evaluated some of the bureau’s aquaculture projects, including its previous, present and proposed undertakings.

The visit is one of the preparatory activities in connection with the ADB Aquaculture Development Technical Assistance, a proposed project of Bfar submitted for approval to the concerned institution.

The mission was composed of Nasimul Islam from the ADB and Abundio Galicia Jr. and Nemecio Arevalo of the Bfar Central Office.

In the briefing held at Dynasty Court Hotel last Aug. 27 to 28, Bfar 10 Director Arlene Pantanosas presented to the team the Northern Mindanao Tilapia and seaweeds, both aquaculture commodities that were given much focus in the region yesterday.

Pantanosas said there was a discussion among the group on issues and concerns prevalent in the region with regards to the implementation of projects, local government unit capabilities and coordination with other stakeholders, among others.

The following day, the team, together with Bfar 10 staff, visited a tilapia model farm in Manbayaan, Bali-ngasag, Misamis Oriental.

The farm is one of the six model farms being studied by the Bfar 10 to verify the technology of culturing tilapia for eight months to produce 500 grammers or more, the desired size for processing tilapia fillet.

The team also toured the one-fourth-hectare seaweed farm in Aplaya, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental along with Mayor Redentor Jardin, where Islam personally saw for the first time how seaweeds are cultured.

The seaweed farm in Jasaan is culturing Kap-paphycus alvarezii.

The proposed 1.5-hectare site of the tilapia fillet processing plant located in the Phividec Estate, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental was also visited along with the Mindanao International Container Port. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
