Lawyers fun debate. The IBP Law Week had a first in IBP history when it held a Lawyers Fun Debate last Sept. 20 at the IBP Social Hall. The activity was co-sponsored by the Federaccion Internacional de Abogadas (Fida-Cebu).

Four teams joined the debate. The IBP Cebu City Team was composed of Attys. Amit, Butch Cañares and Michelle Mendez; the Young Lawyers Association of Cebu (Ylac) fielded Attys. Michael Yu, Earl Bonachita and Mattew Velez. The Cebu Chapter team was composed of Attys. Joselito “Boy” Alo, Nilo Baloria and Alice Morada while Fida had Attys. Gloria Dalawampu, Archill Faller-Capistrano and Lelani Reso-or.

The only criterion for judging was humor and jokes were definitely on the house. Judges included Atty. Liza Corro of Fida, Atty. Ronnie Gocuan of IBP Cebu Chapter, Atty. Gingging Navarro of IBP Cebu City and Cella, Inc., Atty. Glen Capanas of Ylac and Atty. Abinales of Manlaw. The Cebu City Team and the Cebu Chapter fought it out in the finals round which ended in a draw. Both teams agreed to donate the cash prize to their respective chapters.

The hotly contested Inter-Law Schools Competition held last Sept. 21 at the Ayala Activity Center saw all six law schools in Cebu city battling it out in two categories: impromptu speech contest and the quiz bowl. The impromptu speech contest was co-sponsored by Toastmasters International. First place went to the University of San Carlos, second place – University of Cebu, and third place – University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R). The quiz bowl champion was the University of Cebu, second place went to USJ-R and third place to the University of San Carlos.

Both chapters of the IBP had a legal aid program at the IBP Building last Sept. 22. Legal aid lawyers, assisted by volunteers, assisted several indigent clients who were able to avail themselves of free legal consultation. Its secretary, Atty. John Neumeran, heads the Cebu City Chapter’s legal aid program.

The newly renovated IBP Building was inaugurated last Sept. 23. It started with a blessing and a ribbon cutting. Present during the inauguration were Rep. Raul V. del Mar, Justices of the Court of Appeals, Executive Judge RTC Cebu City Simeon Dumdum, members of the Provincial Board, Cebu City Vice-Mayor Michael Rama and city councilors who are also members of the IBP Cebu City and Cebu Chapters: Hilario Davide Jr., Gerardo Carillo, Procopio Fernandez, Jose Daluz and Jocelyn Pesquera.

The program was capped with a lunch buffet at the IBP Social Hall. In the afternoon of Friday, the Bench and Bar Dialogue was held at the IBP Social Hall.

There were more judges than lawyers who attended the dialogue. Also present were from the Cebu Province and Cebu City Prosecutors’ Office. Several concerns of judges, prosecutors and lawyers were taken up with the agreement for a quarterly bench and bar dialogue to be undertaken to improve and properly coordinate the administration of justice in Cebu city and province.

The Law Week closed with a fellowship night at the IBP Social Hall. The night was highlighted with the first ever “Search for the IBP Singing Idol” – a Videoke Singing Musicale Extravaganza. Winner for the Male Category was Atty. Ronnie Gocuan, president of the IBP Chapter, with his rendition of Barbra Streisand’s All I Ask of You. Adjudged female singing idol was Atty. Michelle G. Mendez of the IBP Cebu City Chapter. She sang I Will Survive. Timex watches were awarded the winners courtesy of Mandaue Lawyers Association (Manlaw) president, Atty. Raul Sanchez.
