Serna: Visitations By Roger Serna Sounds and images
Was it Malu Barry’s face I saw on television one early evening? Malu, though more popularly known as a seductive singer, is also recognized as a competent character actress.
In fact, the late Lino Brocka acknowledged this and even included her in the cast of the multi-awarded director’s last movie (if my memory serves me right).
Though I’m not quite sure since I was in a hurry that night to catch up with my appointment in the gym, that image of a pretty face (though deglamorized in that scene) somehow got stuck in my memory.
I still have to verify though if my suspicion that Malu is indeed in the cast ABS-CBN’s new teleseries, Vietnam Rose. Another effective character actress that I also saw in that night’s episode was Chanda Romero.
It’s nice to note that these thespians are active once again. It’s quite enjoyable to see them essay challenging roles with depth and range—and thus make viewers say they’re spending their titme wisely before their TV sets.
In another teleseries, I also caught a glimpse of the pretty face of Hilda Koronel. What’s more noteworthy is that, unlike some of her recent projects both on TV and on the wide screen, Hilda was in her very glamorous appearance that night.
What a joy to see. More projects for these effective actresses please!

Fresh from her triumph (together with fellow Visayan, an Ilonggo actually, Jed Madela) in the World Championships for the Performing Arts in Hollywood, Rizza Navales met some friends both from the Cebu media and other sectors in a victory party of sorts at Ratsky two Sundays ago.
As expected, Rizza gave those who attended the party, a glimpse of that world-class performance that gave her five gold medals and one silver in that global contest participated in by 51 countries.
Rizza had the Livewyre Band to back her up and what a good job the sought-after group did. Its vocalist even did a duet number with Rizza.
Oh, Bigfoot’s big boss also sang with Rizza his favorite Tagalog song (he did an MTV of this in fact), Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang Dumating?
Ms. Ida Henares, who accompanied Rizza and Jed to the contest, narrated how the delegation heads and performers laughed when she announced that she only brought two talents from the Philippines in contrast to their planeload and hundreds of performers.
To quote Ida: “Filipino talents will surely excel if only the playing fields are equal.” Agree? She also promised to bring more talents to the same contest next year.
They were supposed to show an excerpt of the contest but unfortunately the VCD they brought along was not compatible with the player. Sad. GMA 7 Cebu’s Anne Marie Tan promised to show the said VCD during the week. Did you see it?
Anyway, since the last time I saw and heard Rizza sing here in Cebu (she was then using her real name Nerissa Mantilla), I noticed much improvements in her: vocal quality, stage presence, confidence and all.Congratulations!

Aga Muhlach, John Lloyd Cruz and comedienne Pokwang stopped by Cebu last weekend to promote the movie Dubai. Unlike what some of us thought, according to the three stars, Dubai is not totally focused on the love triangle involving Aga, John Lloyd and Claudine Barretto but on the lives and travails of our brothers and sisters overseas Filipino workers there.
Pokwang said she was able to relate to the story easily—and even tearfully narrated her six month stint in Abu Dhabi—where she was unable to come home and attend the burial of her eldest child because of her contract.
