Armed men burn cell site in Bohol

Eight armed men clad in police uniform burned a cell site of Globe Telecom in Tagbilaran City, Bohol Sunday night.

The culprits identified themselves as members of the New People’s Army (NPA) as they disarmed and told the lone security guard of the telecommunication firm’s cell site to cooperate with them. They then led the guard to an electric post 10 meters away and handcuffed him.

PO3 Teofanes Olaso said the cell site is in the hinterland part of Mansasa district and is more than an hour’s ride from the city’s police headquarters. The culprits had already left when combined units of the Philippine Army and police arrived.

As of yesterday, authorities had yet to receive an intelligence report indicating what NPA unit the group belongs to or its specific area of concentration in Bohol.

“More on harassment ug pag-intimidate. We have no word from Globe whether the incident stemmed from the firm’s failure to pay the revolutionary tax,” Olaso said in Cebuano.

The culprits first tried to knock down the transmitter tower using a welding equipment but when they ran out of welding rod, two of them scaled the satellite dish. They then poured kerosene on it before setting it on fire. They also set fire to the facility below.

Olaso said they have yet to raise the red alert since Sunday’s incident was the first attack by the NPA in Tagbilaran City this year. (AIV)
