Contractor to fix building’s defects

The contractor of the P60-million Cebu Provincial Legislative building has agreed to correct its defects, after a meeting with Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Vice Mayor Gregorio Sanchez.

Among the corrections Dakay Construction will undertake is to convert the roof deck into a storage room for records.

It also agreed to use a particular brand for the discussion system of the session hall at no additional cost, after legislators complained that the firm did not follow contract specifications.

PB Member Victor Maambong suggested that Dakay’s commitment to correct the defects should be put into writing.

The governor also explained the reason for the leaks in the offices of the Provincial Board (PB) members. She said the roof is not even because the middle part is higher than the side, so rainwater passes through the side of the rooftop before dripping into the rooms.

The roof was originally designed to carry heavy loads because the building was to have a centralized air conditioning system, which requires chillers on the roof. But the plan was shelved because it was too costly.

To correct the problem, it was agreed during the meeting that the roof will be converted into a storage room for records.

The engineering department and Dakay will coordinate to come up with the proposal for the conversion.

As to the complaints that the elevator is not stable, Garcia will be meeting with the sub-contractor next month.

The PB has tasked the committees on infrastructure and complaints to jointly look into the defects of the building.

Maambong has volunteered to join the investigation team, saying he was among those who experienced the elevator’s instability. (MBG)
