Talk back: Hands-on mayor By Osmundo manreal jr. Association of Barangay Councils Talisay City
This in reaction to a letter from a “concerned taxpayer and bonafide Talisaynon” which came out Sept. 26 with the title, “Who’s running Talisay City Hall?”
I am saddened by the allegation, and I am just one of 20 barangay captains who can attest to the fact that the city administrator is doing her job well, but she does not assume the mayor’s function.
Mayor Socrates Fernandez is a hands-on mayor although he consults City Administrator Aurora Econg regarding the legality of his decisions because he is not a lawyer.
The mayor was the one who decided and executed projects of the City — the sanitary landfill area in Barangay Tapul, the Gawad Kalinga projects on free housing, the Bethlehem housing projects initiated by Fr. John Iacono, sustaining the economic status of Talisay (without new debts to any banks), the creation of ecological protection programs (such as, the vanguards and Fiseca, which protect our environment) – without any intervention from the city administrator.
We, the barangay captains, affirm that Mayor Fernandez plans, decides and executes vital and important projects in Talisay.
