Speak out: Imelda's apology By Rep. Crispin Beltran Anakpawis
Imelda Marcos should bury her husband in an ordinary cemetery and apologize to the Filipino people.
Her continuing pleas and demands that her family be allowed at last to put the body of Ferdinand Marcos to rest in the Libingan ng mga Bayani have become tedious and infuriating, especially given recent developments wherein the Arroyo government is all set to "do a Marcos" and impose martial law.
It’s a slap on the face of all of Marcos’ victims and martial law survivors that the Arroyo government continues to entertain Imelda Marcos’ demands, while up to this day justice is being denied them.
The nightmare of the Marcos dictatorship is now being relived by Filipinos.
Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo doesn’t even have to declare martial law for authoritarian rule to be imposed. Already, the police and military forces are attacking rallies and making illegal arrests left and right.
The recent ban on protests and rallies is all too reminiscent of martial law. Macapagal-Arroyo is now operating on Marcos’ rules of political suppression and repression.
What rubs the salt deeper into our wounds is constantly seeing Imelda make her public plea and hearing Marcos Jr. say that it’s his family that has been persecuted and it’s their rights that are being violated.
