Pagulayan thrashes Parica in US pool finals

It was an all-Filipino affair in the US Open as Alex Pagulayan defeated Jose “Amang” Parica, 11-6, to take home the title and $40,000 at the Chesapeake Conference Center.

Staying in character, the comic Pagulayan told Azbilliards that he has accomplished two of his three goals in life: Winning the World Pool Championship in 2004 and the US Open. The only remaining goal remains impossible even for a player of Pagulayan’s caliber – He wants to grow two inches taller.

One-loss side

Pagulayan got into the finals seat after defeating Parica, also 11-6, to send the latter to the one-loss side with former world No.1 Francisco “Django” Bustamante and Earl Strickland.

The rematch of the 2002 World Pool Championship final proved to be short as Bustamante booted out “The Pearl,” 11-4, to arrange an all-Filipino showdown with Parica and Pagulayan for the top purse.

Bustamante and Parica had a close battle for the right to face Pagulayan, and a costly miscue put Django up, 10-9, before Parica evened the count for a close 11-10 win.

Strong streak

Parica’s strong streak continued in the first half of the final as he went to-to-toe with Pagulayan for a 5-all deadlock before the Filipino-Canadian stringed four straight racks to pull ahead, 9-5. Parica managed to narrow it to 9-6 but it was the closest he could get as Pagulayan took the next two racks.

Parica pocketed $20,000 for the loss, Bustamante took $10,000 and Strickland $5,000.

Pagulayan increased his 2005 winnings to $33,324, earlier earning $18,000 in the Derby City Classic Ring 10-ball and $10,000 in the All Filipino Open. ML
