Group calls Pinoys to act, stop talk

As the Personnel Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) 42nd annual conference opens today, an official of the group urged the public to act, not talk.

“Our country needs more action than words from our business, government and corporate leaders,” said PMAP executive director Gerardo Plana in a press conference yesterday.

This year’s PMAP conference, held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, focuses on the theme: “Gawa, hindi dada (deeds not talk)! Delivering results through purposeful action.”

Plana said the conference theme is not only a call to human resource (HR) practitioners but to the whole country as well.

Principles of getting things done and unlocking the secrets of plan execution will be discussed during the conference, he added.

“Most of us have focused on other areas like improving communication skills and improving on planning and strategic skills. But very little was given on the matter of getting things done, which is very important in bringing success to a company or to a country,” he said.

PMAP president Lina Aseneta said the group expects 1,300 participants.

Students are also invited to participate for a minimal fee, depending on what session they will attend in.

Plana told news reporters that PMAP has been supporting the bill filed a representative from Batangas, which seeks to create a national human resource agenda commission.

“It’s time that we have this. It seems that we’re not focusing on one of our greatest assets, the Filipino people. The proposed commission would give human resource practitioners a venue to talk about national human resource issues like brain drain, skills development, among others,” he said.

But Plana said even if the bill won’t prosper, PMAP will continue to advocate for the drafting of a national HR agenda.

Aseneta said PMAP is also campaigning against corruption. “We launched our Kutong-Free Philippines Movement last February. Our member companies are encouraged and sworn not to give bribes,” she added.

Plana said for corruption in government to be eliminated, businessmen should not engage in bribery. (ALC)
