Capturing Hershey’s happiness moment

What do birthdays, weddings, a barkada’s night out and enjoying a bar of Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar have in common? These are happy moments worth taking pictures of. What better opportunity to celebrate the happiness chocolate brings than by capturing it on film for the Hershey’s Happiness Photo Contest?

The contest is open to anybody who wants to share his Hershey’s Happiness moment. One doesn’t need a bag full of fancy camera equipment, a case of film and a professional portfolio to compete.

All one needs is a camera, willing subjects, patience and probably some pointers for guidance.

Here, Hershey’s offers some handy tips to capture that winning
Hershey’s Happiness Moment.

See them eye to eye. When you focus the lens on your subject, try to make direct eye contact. Draw them into the picture by going nearer and letting their gaze pull you in. That means that if you’re snapping a child, stoop down to their height level. If your subject is tall, get that needed boost by stepping on a small bench or a chair. When you look at the finished product, you’ll see that the extra effort is worth it.

Observe your background. When you compose your photo, opt for a cleaner background for your subject. Look into the camera viewfinder and observe your model’s surroundings. Is your daughter against a tall plant where branches and leaves seem to be growing out of her head? Is there a person standing in the background that seems to rest on her shoulder? Try to eliminate these unnecessary details by shifting your angle or moving to a different location.

Flash photography. Taking photos outdoors can be a challenge, especially when your subject is against the sun. Shine over those deep, harsh shadows by using your camera’s flash. This will immediately lighten the face and show more detail on the picture.

Flash also comes handy on cloudy days, giving your loved one a nice glow.

Zoom in. Capture a happy moment better by closing in on your loved one. You want to be close enough that he or she fills at least 85% of the frame so you can reveal fascinating details like great teeth, full lips or a sprinkle of freckles that would add more character to your subject. But don’t zoom in too tight for your picture will become blurry. The closest focusing distance for most cameras is at least three feet or a couple of steps away from the camera.

Steady does it. The biggest reason for blurry pictures isn’t the camera setting, the lens or the type of film used. It’s an unsteady hand that causes “camera shake.” So, plant your feet firmly on the ground, tuck your elbows comfortably while the camera is pressed against your face, pause and gently squeeze the shutter. It helps to count but if need be, use a tripod particularly when you’re taking photos using a slow shutter speed.

Loosen up. You might command the camera but you don’t have to be a dictator. After all, you’re not taking a class picture so everything doesn’t need to be perfect. Kid around with your siblings or kabarkada and get that genuine fun-filled moment. Watch out for candid moments then point and click. For a change, don’t keep them lined up in one neat row. Use props, makeup or let your subject get wacky to add some zing to your image. There are fun and creative possibilities beyond frozen smiles and a firing squad shot.

Now, you’re ready to capture the ultimate Hershey’s Happiness Moment.

Once you have the shots, submit your best work via email to photocontest@hersheys happiness.com.ph or through MMS at HERSHEYS SUBMIT at 2256. You can also drop off your photo entry with your complete name, address, age, telephone number and gender at designated LBC and Digiprint outlets.

If you’re not too handy with camera, you can still join the Hershey’s Happiness Photo Contest by simply purchasing your favorite Hershey’s Milk Chocolate and have your photo taken for free at the Hershey’s Happiness Booth roving around in selected major malls around the country.

Cut-off for photo entries submission is on Oct. 23. For more information, one may log on to www.hersheyshappiness.com.ph.
