Model ends RP’s 26-year wait
The country’s bet to the 2005 Miss International beauty pageant, Precious Lara Quigaman, won the crown Monday night in Tokyo, Japan.
Quigaman, 22, a fashion model based in London, bested 52 other candidates and became the fourth Filipina to bag the title.
Miss Dominican Republic Yadira Geara Cury, 19, was first runner-up, while Miss Finland Susanna Laine, 23, was second runner-up.
Quigaman dedicated her triumph to her father, Nelson Quigaman, who died in a car accident in London last May.
“It was my father who said that I would win, and I dedicate my victory to him,” Quigaman said in an ABS-CBN TV Patrol interview last night.
Her mother works as a registered nurse in the United Kingdom.
In Malacañang, President Arroyo congratulated Quigaman for what she said was another feat for Filipinos.
“She joins a long list of Filipinas who have brought our country honor and prestige, not only for their beauty, but also for their intelligence, charm and grace,” the President said in a statement.
The President said Quigaman should be a role model for young Filipinas.
Gemma Cruz, Aurora Pijuan and Melanie Marquez also won the same beauty title. It has been 26 years since a Filipina was named Miss International.
The eldest of four children, Quigaman, was born in Taguig and grew up in Laguna. Aside from being a fashion model, she is currently a web writer.
She has a degree in media production and communications from Filton College in the United Kingdom. She also took up a course in childhood and youth studies at Bristol University.
