Speak out: Respect for our leaders By Ledwina S. Cadungog
Despite her hectic schedule, President Arroyo always takes time to visit people in the Visayas, but with a difference.
A decade or two ago, when the president visited any region in the country, students were instructed to line up along the streets bringing small flags to show respect, honor and salutation. Thus, they would wait for hours under the heat of the sun or under the rain until the president passed them by.
That is no longer a sight during President Arroyo’s visits. It seems like students are no longer mindful of the significance of the visits of the nation’s highest political leaders. Is this because their mentors have failed to inculcate in the minds of the youth the respect, honor and salutation these leaders deserve?
Leaders are made, not born, the reason why only few qualifies for it. Political leaders are public a servants. They are imbued with patriotism. They therefore deserve respect.
The school curriculum contains irrelevant disciplines in building good citizens. It lacks theories and principles on molding upright and productive persons. Why waste a huge sum of public money just to produce undesirable citizens?
