Talk back: Oslob District Hospital
By Sam Costanilla

THIS is a reaction to Dr. Jose Lucero Bonpua's letter that appeared in the Speak Out section (Sun.Star Cebu, Sept. 22).

Oslob District Hospital chief Rebecca Opsima wrote Provincial Health Officer-in-charge Cristina Giango regarding Bonpua's complaint.

In her letter to Giango, Opsima wrote that it is unfortunate that Bonpua has belittled the Oslob District Hospital (ODH) in providing the basics in medical care.

Opsima added that it is preposterous for Bonpua to say that the hospital personnel could not even do such a basic thing as suturing.

Opsima invited Bonpua to look at the ODH's monthly statistical report for him to see the number of surgical operations that the hospital personnel have been doing.

Regarding referrals to other hospitals, Opsima stressed that it is their policy to always give referral notes to other medical institutions whenever a patient gets referred to them.

As to the ODH's operating room, Opsima would like to emphasize that it is not being used as storage room. In fact, she added, they just had a successful surgical mission (cataract operation) last month.

The ODH chief of hospital also wants to make it clear that the institution is, as of the moment, only a 10-bed hospital and that its personnel are not capable of performing major surgical procedures, as these are done only in secondary and tertiary hospitals.

As to ODH's ambulances, Opsima stated that they have two units in good running condition.

She added that when Bonpua used one of these ambulances, it was actually in good running condition but the driver just did something to avoid using the heater as he was in a hurry to transport Bonpua to the city.

The ambulance may not have some amenities like those being used abroad but it could still serve the purpose of transporting patients.

Lastly, Opsima assured Bonpua that the ODH enjoys a yearly on-site inspection by the Department of Health field office and the Philippine Insurance Corp. and based on such inspection, together with the required manpower complement and equipment, the ODH is being licensed to operate every year.

I hope Opsima's points have already clarified the issues raised by Bonpua and enlightened his mind.

Thank you for the space.
