Cesafi basketball All-Stars on Friday
The best and brightest performers of the 2005 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation (Cesafi) basketball wars – along with the league’s spectacular dunkers and deadliest 3-point shooters – are set to converge in an All-Star basketball extravaganza on Friday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The awaited 2005 Cesafi All-Star Game blasts off Friday with a series of gimmicks lined up for the occasion.
Headlining the blockbuster card is the collegiate match between the East and West All-Stars.
Reigning Cesafi All-Star MVP Jayford Rodriguez, the electrifying swingman of University of Visayas (UV) who spearheaded the East’s 90-71 victory over the West last year, will once again top bill the East team, which will be coached by University of San Carlos (USC) coach Mike Reyes.
Rodriguez will be joined by his UV teammates playmaker Mark Ababon, wingman Morsie Akad, and frontliners Rino Nerami, Ariel Mepaña and Norman Sevilla.
West team
Also on the East squad are banger Enrico Llanto, point guard Vernini Tangarorang, deadeye Niño Ramirez and swingman Arlow Jueves of the USC Warriors.
Completing the East squad are swingmen Elvis Labares, Troy Mercader, Vincent Pendang and guard Marlon Demape of the University of Southern Philippines (USP) Panthers.
The West All-Stars, which will be coached by Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildcats strategist Alex Dela Torre, likewise packs an impressive lineup consisting of CIT stalwarts Ramil Aniñon, Karl Ocañada, Ramel Guevarra and Emilio Aniñon.
Also suiting up for the West are Kern Sesante, Jonathan Canceran, Miguelito Ducay, Ata Ayuk and Kane Abatayo of the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, and University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) top guns Luke Justiniani, Herbert Arellano, Ranulfo Malinao, Randy Pogoy and Armand Ponce.
Before the match, the Cesafi’s best rim-rattlers will try to upstage each other as they vie for the Slam Dunk throne vacated former USJ-R wingman Ian Saladaga. UV deadshot Jaysar Esperat, meanwhile, will be back to defend his title as the 3-point shootout king.
The high-school division All-Star match-up, which opens the All-Star event at 5 p.m., appears to be just as promising. Jr. (MVP)
UC Junior Webmasters star center and reigning MVP Jan Colina will lead the West squad, which will try to duplicate its 101-88 demolition job of the East last season.
CIT Wildkittens coach Fernando “Andot” Fuentes will call the shots for the West Junior All-Stars, which parades CIT stalwarts Kiam Ian Alvarez, Rein Carlo Augusto, Rick Dela Cerna, Eliezar Del Mar and Emmanuel Diaz, UC Junior Webmasters Robinson Mohammad, Erbin Espinoza and Jay Tabalin.
Go’s team
Also powering the West are USJ-R Baby Jaguars Renato Abing and Aniceto Lapiz, and Don Bosco Technological Center (DBTC) Greywolves Rodolfo Enterina, Jose Acha, and Jose Luis Garcia.
USP’s Camilo Go will coach the East Junior All-Stars, which will be made up of Phil Mercader, Lucky Pitogo, Edrian Lao, Quinton Herruela and Kevin Arriesgado of the UV Baby Lancers; Adrian Alforque, John Flanco, John Lao and Giovanni Padillo of the USC Baby Wariors; and USP’s Camilo Aligno, Earvin Ferraren, Jordan Hermosa, John Ybañez and Philip Muñez.
