Makinano tops Argao chess

The Diano siblings continued their chess mastery down south in Argao.

Eden Diano and his younger brother Harold, who had a dominating 1-2 finish in last month’s E-Mall Chess Challenge, posted six points to tie for first place with Anthony Makinano and National Master Elwin Retanal in the Argao Chess Open, which was held over the weekend at the Training Center of the southern town of Argao.

Eden created the biggest stir in the ultimate seventh round when he ended Makinano’s six-game winning streak.

The solo leader entering the final round, Makinano only needed a draw against Diano to secure the championship outright.

However, Makinano still managed to win the title with his superior tiebreak points over the Dianos and Retanal.

Equal share

With inferior tiebreak scores, Harold and Eden were relegated to the third and fourth, spots, respectively, but their gallant final-round efforts earned them equal share of the first to fourth prizes totaling P7,800 with Makinano and Retanal, who was first runner-up.

Rounding out the top 10 were Voltaire Sevillano, Richard Natividad, Rodrigo Alejandre, Kim Steven Yap, Carlos Moreno III and William Retanal Jr.

Sofia Balite (Best lady Player), reigning Shell National Youth Active Chess Cebu leg kiddie champion and Argao native Yves Fiel (Best Kiddie Player), and Venancio Loyola (Best High School Player) took the special awards of the seven-round tournament, which was organized by the Argao Chess Club, headed by club president Percy Fiel and secretary Vic Cueme.

The event was sponsored by the Argao Sports Commission, through its chairman George Albarracin and treasurer Javier Villaflor and Argao Mayor Wilfredo Caminero.
