Mantawi ties up series

The Mantawi Sparkling Nights and Ozamiz Cotta bounced back from their respective Game 1 de bacles with series-equalizing victories in the 2005 Panasonic-NBC National Championships playoffs.

At the Mandaue City Sports Complex Monday night, the Mayor Thadeo Ouano-backed Nights rode on Ardy Larong’s 26-point explosion to deal the Valencia Golden Harvest a masterful 100-85 dismantling in Game 2 of their South quarterfinal series.

Over at the Gov. Angel Medina Sr. Gym in Ozamiz City, slotman Christian Nicdao had an inspired game to lead Ozamiz to an 88-74 rout of the Iligan Crusaders in Game 2 of their South semifinal series.

The winner of the Manatawi-Valencia series will advance to the South semifinals against Tribu Sugbu, while the winner of the Ozamiz-Iligan series will advance to the South finals.

Chris Carretas and Maui Huelar also doled out crucial contributions as they scored 16 and 14 points, respectively.

After dropping the series opener in Valencia City, the Nights proved to be a lethal force as Carretas stepped up in place of Marvin Tundag, who was limited to only six points in the game.

The usually slow-starting Nights dropped started hot, leaving the visiting squad, 27-15, in the opening quarter.

With Larong asserting his scoring prowess, the Nights recorded the league’s best scoring in a half at 54 points to erect a 17-point lead at the bend.

Valencia failed to get its game going when the defense of the Nights clipped the usually explosive game of point guard Julius Navales, who was limited to only nine points.
