Cops urge: Move suspects
Citing security reasons, the Cebu Provincial Police Office asked the Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Bogo town to have two suspects in the Land Bank of the Philippines robbery transferred to the provincial jail. Dindo Ancero, 30, and Isagani Chico, 31, were presented yesterday morning in Bogo before RTC Judge Antonio Marigumen, who issued the warrant of arrest against the 12 suspects in the P9.4-million heist last Aug. 2.
Police arrested the two men during a manhunt last Sept. 19 in Sitio Anagon, Barangay Kabungahan, Kawayan, Masbate.
Chief Insp. Juanito Enguerra, chief of the provincial Special Operations Group, asked the court that Ancero and Chico be jailed at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) instead of being detained at the Bogo Police Station.
The CPDRC is in Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City.
Transfer
The two were originally detained in Bogo, after they were brought to Cebu last Sept. 23 from Masbate. They were later transferred, however, to Lapu-Lapu City.
Chico’s lawyer, Salvador Solima, filed a petition for habeas corpus for his client. (See separate story)
Enguerra, in an interview, said he is ready to go to court to answer Solima’s petition.
Marigumen allowed the transfer of Ancero to the CPDRC, but Chico will remain in the Lapu-Lapu City jail pending the resolution of his lawyer’s petition.
Ancero was committed to the CPDRC at 5:45 p.m., TV Patrol Cebu reported last night.
Henry Cuerda, the security guard of Land Bank Bogo, remains detained at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) 7, while another accused, Joseph Ancajas, a former Army officer, is being held at the Bogo Police Station.
Ozamiz boys
Meanwhile, the Cebu City Police Office is expected to file today a robbery complaint against the four members of an Ozamiz City-based robbery gang who were tagged in last Monday’s robbery of East West Bank along Archbishop Reyes Ave.
Seven witnesses pointed to the four men as the ones who pulled the heist and grabbed P70,000.
The Cebu City Government and police officials are putting pressure on banks, cell phone shops and moneychangers to tighten their security measures, following the East West bank robbery.
Last Monday’s heist was the second for the same branch. The bank lost about P500,000 to five robbers last Jan. 31.
The suspected gang leader, Rey Torres, has been arrested. (JST)
