Wenceslao: Pinoys’ triumph By Bong O. Wenceslao
The wins of boxers Manny Pacquiao, Brian Viloria and Rey Bautista at the Staples Center weeks ago, and now, this: Filipina Precious Lara Quigaman topping the Miss International beauty pageant after a drought of 26 years. Of course, other Pinoys before this have conquered the world. But unlike then, they no longer come in trickles.
Years ago, I had this feeling the Filipino diaspora will prove to be beneficial to the country in the long run. That sooner or later, Pinoys abroad will conquer the world through sheer talent and industry. This despite all the heartaches and tragedy that accompany the story of the Pinoy’s leaving for foreign shores.
Now, it has become difficult to count the number of Filipinos, or Fil-foreigners, who have carved a name internationally--in the work force, business, entertainment, sports, etc. What is ironic there is that even as the diaspora has kept this country afloat through dollar remittances, etc., this country’s leaders are still trying to drown us all.

It’s good that the Cebu City Government is about to be given, finally, titles for the South Reclamation Project (SRP), which will soon be known as South Road Properties (what’s in a name, really?). After that, City Hall officials will no longer have any reason for their failure to develop the area in time for the start of the payment of the loan.
Indeed, it is easy for City Hall officials to use as cover their conflict with Talisay over the jurisdiction of 53.44 hectares of the SRP. Because of that, people overlooked the fact that the SRP has still to be developed fully to lure in investors. Water and power connection still has to be set in place. Then there are infrastructures still to be built.

I don’t personally know Cebu Daily News (CDN) editor-in-chief Ivan Suansing, although I read his writings in the Cebu Daily News and the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Still, it is with sadness that I learned about his passing yesterday after a nine-hour operation at the Perpetual Succor Hospital. Suansing succumbed to aortic aneurysm.
My heartfelt condolences to his family and relatives; to CDN, which lost a pillar of its young organization; and to the Cebu and Iloilo media, which lost a competent colleague. Suansing’s death should remind deadline-beating media practitioners to take it easy from time to time. As our elders would say, “lawas ra bayay atong puhunan.”
TEXTREAX. On Cebu City Councilor Augustus Pe Jr., the most visible polis-polis City Hall official, here’s Cristian Malaki: “Jun Pe on his conducting surprise inspections: Just following Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s orders. Jun Pe on being reportedly drunk during surprise inspections? Still following Tomas.”
