Cesafi holds All-Stars, dunk fest
The Cebu Coliseum, arena of many historic episodes of Cebu sports, will host another potential classic sporting spectacle today – the 2005 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) All-Star Games.
The best and brightest performers of the 2005 Cesafi cage wars, along with the league’s most spectacular dunkers and deadliest 3-point shooters, are set to converge in the league’s midseason classic, which gets underway at 5 p.m.
After arguably the most competitive and drama-filled of Cesafi’s five regular seasons, the league takes a needed albeit very short break before resuming hardcourt battle on Sunday for the semifinals.
“It’s all systems go,” said 2005 Cesafi basketball commissioner Danny Duran. “Everything is set, and the fans are in for a big treat.”
Headlining the blockbuster card is the All-Star Collegiate match between the East and West All-Stars.
Slam dunk
The High School All-Star match will open hostilities, followed by the Slam Dunk and 3-pt. Shootout.
University of the Visayas dunking terror Morsie Akad leads a 12-man band of slam artists who will vie for the Slam Dunk crown. Other contestants are UV swingman Eulegio Lasala Jr., University of Southern Philippines flyers Bryan Travero and Gilbert Gallarde, and Cebu Institute of Technology’s Jessie Bustos and Emilio Aninon.
Representing the University of San Jose-Recoletos are Lyndon Gudez, Jaime Buena and Fritz Gonzales, while University of Cebu will field in Miguelito Ducay, Ayuk Ata and Jonathan Canceran.
Shootout
In the 3-point Shootout, UV deadeye Jaysar Espera will try to defend his title against fellow Green Lancers Vergel Abelong and Jaymar Pacaldo, USP’s Arletory Mercader, Barret Regado and Jayson Bartolaba, USJ-R’s Herbert Arellano, Luke Justiniani and Jerry Carilla.
Others in contention are CIT gunners Ramile Guevarra, Sherwin Abobo and Jerry Lumonsod, and UC marksmen Orvel Saludsud, Michael Estenzo and Harlow Villanil. (GCM)
