Filipino survives brain injury after fight in Japan

Filipino boxer Ayon Naranjo is recovering fast at the hospital after he suffered a brain injury IN his Sept. 25 fight in Yokohama, Japan.

Naranjo, a featherweight, lost to undefeated Venezuelan slugger Jorge Linares.

He lasted the full distance in their six-round bout despite absorbing powerful punches from Linares, but was rushed to the hospital after complaining of severe headache after the fight.

Fortunately for Naranjo, who holds a 13-6 win-loss record with five KOs against Linares’ 17-0, 10 KOs, the hospital was just a five-minute drive away from the Yokohama Arena, the venue of the fight.

Out of danger

Yesterday Japanese doctors declared Naranjo, a native of Bukidnon Province, out of danger, surviving the crisis without having to undergo surgery. He was transferred to a ward after spending three days at the Intensive Care Unit.

He is scheduled to return to the Philippines in two weeks.

The Japanese Boxing Commission commended the efforts of ring physician Otsuki for saving the life of Naranjo, who was rushed to the hospital 30 minutes after his fight.

Second incident

It was the second of similar ring injury in Japan this month. The first involved Japanese boxer Masayuki Fujikake, who was hospitalized after he suffered blood clots in the brain after losing his fight against Filipino Federico Catubay last Sept. 16 in Tokyo.

Naranjo fought in the undercard of the World Boxing Association minimumweight title fight between Cebu’s Eriberto Gejon and Japanese champion Yutaka Niida. The Japanese beat the Cebuano to retain his title.

Also in the card was the WBC bantamweight championship fight between Hozumi Hasegawa and Gerardo Martinez. (RCM)
