Luzon, Visayas All-Stars outshine Mindanao Selection in NBC

ILIGAN CITY – The undermanned Luzon/Visayas All-Stars took one of the 2005 National Basketball Conference All-Star Games in a come-from-behind 96-87 win Wednesday at the packed MSU-IIT Gym here.

Parañaque Jets’ Alex Bognot and the Cavite Insurers’ Arnold Booker showed the way for the Luzon/Visayas All-Stars with a combined 43-point output to thrash the Mindanao-All Stars.

Luzon/Visayas All-Stars played without Cavite’s Marvin Ortiguerra and Mantawi Sparkling Nights’ Ardy Larong and Dennis Daa.

Injured

Ortiguerra was nursing an injury while Larong, who figured in a punching foul in Mantawi’s conference semiinal defeat to Valencia Golden Harvest last Tuesday, begged off not to play together with Daa.

Bognot scored a game-high 23 points, including two dunks, on top of 10 rebounds, as the Luzon/Visayas selection coached by Tribu Sugbu’s Al Solis outscored Mindanao, 24-11, in the fourth quarter for the victory.

Booker joined the show with daredevil moves around the basket for 20 markers often drawing oohs and aahs from the sellout crowd at the 5,000-seater gym in the heart of Iligan City.

Mindanao, under coach by Iligan’s Billy Reyes, led most of the way behind Cagayan de Oro Stars’ gunner Roderick Ramos and Ronan Isidro, who wound up with 12 and 10 points, respectively. But the duo faded away in the payoff period even as Ozamiz Cotta’s Christian Nicdao and Billy Bansil failed to get back into the game.

Slam-Dunk winner

In the side events, Ozamiz Cotta’s Roland Delina topped the Slam-Dunk Competition over Booker and Parañaque Jets’ Alex Bognot, with a difficult 360-degree jam earning him a perfect 30 points in the finals.

Booker went on to win the 3-point Shootout, nipping Boyet Guerrero of Tribu Sugbu and Ozamiz Cotta’s Melfred Sampilo in the final round after Guerrero registered a contest-high 18 points in the elimination round.

Booker hit 13 in the final round to emerge champion in the Iligan leg co-presented by Holcim Philippines, ABU Caltex, Mabuhay Vinyl Corp., National Power Corp. and Jolibee/Greenwhich-Iligan.

Day two of the 2005 NBC All-Star was played in Valencia City yesterday.

Meanwhile, Game 2 of the Northern Conference semifinal series between Forward Taguig and Bacchus/Harbour Centre-Manila will be played at 4 p.m. today at the San Beda College Gym.

Manila had Arjun Cordero and James Hudencial playing vital roles in their sensational playoffs run.

Manila beat Taguig in Game 1, 77-68, at the C.P. Tinga Gym in Taguig.

Luzon/Visayas (96) – Bognot 23, Booker 20, Alminario 13, Mercado 12, Kalaw 8, Guerrero 4, Guiyab 4, Huelar 2, Almacin 2, Allado 2.
