2 CIDG 7 men mistaken for robbers caught, freed By Oscar C. Pineda Sun.Star Staff Reporter
An alarm for two potential robbers turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.
Members of the Lapu-Lapu City Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) team confronted the “suspects” in Barangay Basak early Thursday dawn. But the two turned out to be members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).
No case was filed against Senior Insp. Richard Caballero and PO1 Renato Garcia because the taxi driver, Ruel Medina, who earlier thought they were up to no good, did not press charges.
Armed passengers
The misunderstanding started when Caballero and Garcia hailed Medi-na’s taxi to bring them to Cebu City.
Inside, the two reportedly argued and the driver saw their shining pistols tucked in their waistband.
Thinking that they were holduppers, the driver jumped out of vehicle and alarmed the police.
At 1 a.m. Thursday, the Swat team, armed with high-powered rifles, went to the area along Basak highway. They spotted the taxi near the hospital with the two men still inside.
The operatives shouted at the two to drop on the ground and the two obediently complied upon seeing fully armed, black-clad operatives.
“Sir, ikaw diay na, sir,” was the surprised Swat operative PO1 Cielito Cañete’s remark when he recognized Caballero.
Caballero was Cañete’s former commanding officer when they were both assigned at the Regional Mobile Force.
No charges
They went to the police station where the taxi driver was waiting.
When asked if he would press charges against the officials for taking his cab, the driver said no. Apparently he realized that he was partly to blame for what happened.
The CIDG officials and taxi driver, both in good spirits, parted ways.
