DSWD 7 urges LGUs, NGOs to mark Elderly Filipino Week
The first week of October has been declared as “Linggo ng Nakakatandang Pilipino” or the “Elderly Filipino Week.”
This year’s celebration runs from Oct. 1-7.
The theme, “Nakakatanda: Gintong Tanglaw Tungo sa Kaunlaran,” aims to promote the rights and well-being of older persons as well as recognize their valuable contributions in nation building and emulate the exemplary participation of senior citizens in public and private efforts.
As part of the activities to provide support for older persons, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 7 has lined up suggested activities for the weeklong celebration: Walk for Life/Healthy Lifestyle; Sampung Ulirang Nakakatanda Awardees; medical/legal mission for the visitorless, indigent, sick older prisoners; Dalaw Kalinga 2005 (visit to centers and institutions);
Forum/seminar on RA 9257; culminating activity like “Handog” which is a variety show for the elderly; and other advocacy activities like TV/radio guestings, press conferences, Kapihan sa PIA, press releases and display of streamers.
DSWD is encouraging all local government units as well as other government organizations, non-government organizations and the public to observe this year’s celebration and initiate the conduct of other activities.
