Eala warns pros on use of stickum

PHILIPPINE Basketball Association players who insist on using stickum such as Pro Grip in order to have a better grip of the leather during games are warned by league commissioner Noli Eala that they will “pay a steep price” if caught without the league’s implicit go-ahead signal.

Eala recently reiterated that players can’t use stickum, an adhesive substance that gives the user a better grip, after several players voiced their opinion favoring the use of the substance.

“As long as most of the players don’t want to use it, nobody will use it. Those who choose to use it during PBA games without the league’s implicit permission will pay a steep price,” Eala said.

The first-time offenders found using the banned substance will be fined P1,000, which will gradually increase to P4,600 after the fifth offense.

And on his sixth offense, Eala said the player will be liable for suspension.

The substance, which is also used in yachting, golf, tennis and vaulting, is most favored by the PBA’s big men, who want to have a better control of the ball during games.

But not all cagers are in favor of the substance, especially the shooters, who said that the ball gets more slippery once sweat is mixed with it. (JSV)
