Honda comes up with sporty, smart sedan

TEN years after it was introduced into the market, the Honda City is taking on a new look with a totally revamped exterior styling and enhanced performance features.

The Honda research and development team led by its chief engineer, Takashi Saito, has successfully transformed the Honda into a “sporty smart sedan” with the front nose extended and front end of the engine hood raised, according to a statement.

“True to Honda’s philosophy of providing joy to the customer, the 2006 Honda City was re-designed primarily to satisfy one’s visual senses.

From the rear, the new set of tail lights that extend up to the trunk and sportier rear bumper with tailpipe finisher give the City a wider, more beautiful and refreshing look,” the company’s statement read.

Features

The new City sports 15-inch alloy wheels, dual horns and a print-type radio antenna.

The 1.5 City’s Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control System (Vtec) variant also carries a new suspension, increased high speed range and strengthened support arm bracket. It has an improved engine sound and brake pedal.

The interior has luminous optitron meters, stylized dials, high-grade gear-shift or CVT select lever, black seat cushions and various consoles, including an MP3 stereo and keyless entry system.

It has a spacious cabin with a 500-liter trunk capacity matched with flexible seat arrangements through Honda’s ingenious utility, long and tall seat modes (ULT).

The ULT seats create versatility in seating and cargo loading, allowing maximum storage size of 1.8 meters in width in utility mode and a length of 2.0 to 2.6 meters in long mode and a height of 1.2 meters in tall mode.

The new City also continues to showcase some of Honda’s innovative breakthroughs in engine technology.

At the heart of the 1.3-liter City is the i-DSI (Intelligent Dual and Sequential Ignition), an installation of Honda’s cutting edge i-series engines.

Fuel efficient

The compact and lightweight i-DSI engine provides maximum torque at 2,800 revolutions per minute (rpm).

With the employment of the ingenious dual spark plug system, a system with two spark plugs and two valves per cylinder with individually controlled ignition timing, the i-DSI engine offers a more rapid and complete combustion, achieving the best fuel efficiency.

For those who choose power with moderate economy, the 1.5-liter engine employs the latest version of Honda’s reknowned Vtec engine technology.

This new engine is capable of delivering a maximum power of 110 ps (metric horsepower) at 5,800 rpm and a maximum torque output of 14.6 kilograms at 4,800 rpm.

New design technologies have also been implemented in its layout to allow a more rapid combustion and lowered friction, ensuring a high level of balance between powerful dynamic performance and high fuel economy at varying engine speeds.

This design, paired with an exhaust system optimized for a Vtec engine, allows for a leaner fuel burn, thereby improving emission quality.

Safety

The 2006 Honda City variant complies with the stringent Euro4 emission standards, making it an environmentally friendly vehicle as well.

Supplemental safety features include Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Brake Assist, Dual Supplemental Restraint System Airbags and Pretensioner seatbelts with load limiters and neck shock mitigation seats.

The new City is now available in any of the Honda dealers. (JBN)
