Capitol plans paint job for roadside houses

OLD houses along the roads of Cebu’s southern towns will soon have a fresh coat of paint, as part of the Cebu Provincial Government’s plans to beautify the countryside and work on Cebu’s tourism potential.

“If you notice down south, there are several old houses lining the streets. We want these painted, of course with the permission of the owner and proper guidance of our architect. Boysen Paints has indicated its interest to join us in this program, with the possibility of donating the materials for this project,” said Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

The project may be started within the last quarter of this year.

Consultant Melva Java, an architect, has been tasked to prepare the bill of materials. Boysen and Capitol will soon sign a memorandum of agreement.

Garcia said old houses in the north will also be considered for this project and even old convents and churches.

“I’d like our tourists to take more interest in our beautiful towns and our beautiful heritage structures that are so plenty,” she said.

In a related development, the Cebu Provincial Government will start immediate repairs on the roof of the Boljoon church, to protect churchgoers.

The general rule is that local governments cannot intervene if a structure has been declared heritage site by the National Heritage Institute, like the centuries-old Boljoon church, Garcia said.

But in emergencies, the local government can come in. The Province is willing to put up funds for the repair.

Garcia did not agree with representatives of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, who pointed out that they still have to study how to repair the roof for three to five months.

The governor is worried a disaster might happen if the repairs are put off.

Provincial Engineer Eulogio Pelayre reported that they have to put up temporary support for the roof, to keep it from collapsing.

About 15 percent of the country’s foreign tourists visit Cebu, state reports say. (MBG)
