Q tows Red Bull over Aces

RED Bull Barako coach Yeng Guiao feels a sense of guilt seeing Sean Lampley playing with the Ginebra Kings instead of his team.

He said they attempted to sign up Lampley as their import for the Philippine Basketball Association’s (PBA) opening conference this season but the former Miami Heat and Golden State Warrior, who helped Red Bull win the 2002 Commissioner’s Cup, had some commitment at the time.

Happy

“But we’re not complaining. We’re more than happy that we have Q,” proclaimed Guiao, referring to their current import, Quemont Greer.

Greer displayed another splendid performance Sunday night, scoring a conference-high 40 points, including a pivotal tomahawk dunk and free throw in the endgame as the Barakos escaped with a 76-75 cliffhanger over Alaska Aces in a thrilling finish in the San Mig Coffee-PBA Fiesta Conference last night.

The 6-foot-7 forward out of De Paul, who also grabbed 13 rebounds, highlighted his all-around around game with that powerful slam over Alaska import Tee McClary which brought the house down and gave Red Bull a 75-72 lead with 20 seconds left.

Carelessness

But the Aces, whose loss can be attributed to their carelessness, refused to go quietly. With the gameclock winding down, Tony dela Cruz hit a desperate three with four seconds to tie the count at 75.

Red Bull quickly sued for time to plot their final play. When play resumed, McClary was whistled for a hand-checking foul against Greer with only two seconds gone on the game clock.

With Alaska in penalty, the Red Bull import was awarded two free throws with Greer sinking just one.

“The breaks went both ways. We could have lost the same way but it just so happened it went in our favor,” said Guiao.

Red Bull Barako 76 – Greer 40, Villanueva 12, Baguio 6, Bugia 4, Cruz 4, Tugade 4, Valenzuela 4, Robinson 2, Najorda 0, Fonacier 0, Asaytono 0. Alaska 75 – McClary 23, Cortez 14, Cariaso 11, dela Cruz 10, Allado 9, Cablay 6, Alvarez 1, Thoss 1, Hugnatan 0. Quarters: 20-17, 39-37, 62-58, 76-75. (PBA media bureau)
