Little league of their own By Ritchie Landis Doner Quijano
For the very first time in Samboan’s long history, an on-the-spot painting competition was held exclusively for the town’s young homegrown artists.
The day-long outdoor activity was in conjunction with the annual fiesta of Samboan’s patron St. Michael Archangel observed every 30th of September.
The art contest gathered a total of 51 participants vying for the cash prize and trophy. The competition was divided in two age brackets (8-16 yrs. old/17 and above or open category). The day’s affair gave the townsfolk a break from the usual festivities. Aspiring artists were spread across five of the town’s historical landmarks as subjects for the competition, namely: the old watchtower, stone church, World War 2 Voluntario monument, Jacob’s ladder, and the municipal building.
Contestants were allowed the use of any colored medium or a mixture of it. The objectives of the event were realized: it helped discover and develop the local talents, created an awareness and art appreciation among citizens to better help them understand the value of arts and culture.
At dusk the judging was over. The 51 entries were juried by Celso Pepito, Benji Goyha, Adeste Deguilmo, Fabrice Desveaux and myself. Announcement of winners immediately followed. For the open category, Roel Fisalbon bagged first prize, second place went to Roseller Hisoler and the third placer was Adonis Bilocura. At the high school and elementary category John Dinglasa copped the 1st prize, James Gomez garnered second and Raymand Catipay got the 3rd prize. The following day the paintings were exhibited at the DepEd office with Mayor Peter John Calderon opening of the show for public viewing.
