Ozamiz at Tribes’ turf tonight

With or without Jercules Tangkay and Joseph Ronald Quiñahan, Skygo/SirLitz Tribu Sugbu are on a challenge -- win Game 1 and let destiny decide when they travel to Ozamis City for the next games of the Southern Conference finals showdown of the 2005 Panasonic-NBC National Championship.

The undermanned Cebuanos will need more than just their heart to beat Cotta tonight at the MInglanilla Sports Complex as Osamiz a is expected to steal the game from the national defending champions.

Axe

Ozamiz has an axe to grind over the Tribesmen, as the Lito Gillamac and Mario King owned team moved into the national finals and won the title after Ozamiz walked out of their series last year.

In Oct. 19 last year, Tribu Sugbu clinched the finals ticket the easy way after Ozamiz stormed out of the third game with 43.1 seconds remaining.

Ozamiz’s premature departure started when former player Niño Marquez was called for an offensive foul and Egay Echavez was slapped a technical for shoving and screaming at the referee.

This also caused Tribu supporters to pelt objects on the court as Cotta started to head to the locker.

Changed

But everything has changed since the original Tribu Sugbu is left with only Ronaldo Bucao, Doroteo Almacin and Marvin Mercado in its line-up, while Cotta has evolved into the best team in the league after acquiring Chris Nicdao, Billy Bansil, Rulof Liangco, Elbert Albrerto together with its holdovers Melfred Sampilo, Dennis Cabigkis, Neil Libatog and Orly Allvarado.

Tribu Sugbu’s acquisitions include Christopher Guerrero and Chris Ferraen, along with Rex Mangubat, Alex Cainglet and Bernie Ursal.

“If you have observed, I don’t have a regular starting five and all my players play not lower than 10 minutes. I believe in my players’ talents and their big hearts have brought us back here in the finals. We’ll try to bank again on this against Ozamiz,” Solis said. (RCM)
