Cebu Night Market
By Hyacinth Lovell A. Mendoza

Another option on how to spend Saturday evenings has just arrived, as I saw for myself how the same spot for the Cebu Green Market morphed into a dining, shopping and entertainment hub barely a few hours after the same place played market to fresh produce.

“The Cebu Night Market is the suggested hoarder’s evening fair of the morning Green Market patrons,” says Svetlana Osmeña. Located along the Banilad entry road of the Maria Luisa Village, this happens only once monthly, and also has a handful of followers. During this time, people can sample various cooked food—most of which were raw during the Green Market display, take a glimpse of trendy and classic-elegant accessories, buy fresh flowers and be serenaded by a band provided by the Marriott hotel.

True enough, the tables in the hotel’s tent were all taken while Karen Vergara’s roast calf was being enjoyed. There was also Indonesian food, some vegetarian viands and thick noodles, other barbecued goodies, just as Abaseria Deli and Resto Café displayed their offerings—among those who opted to do gastronomic expositions.

Blooms from the Rosinni Flower Studio almost got me thinking I wasn’t seeing right as their eye-catching exotic flora display was swarming with buying and admiring women that I had to ask the attending Rose Amores if they were, indeed, real. And I got a positive response for it. “These are actually from the mountains,” explains Anores. They have a shop at the ground floor of the Discovery mall as well.

There were also displays of wooden decor by the Gasca Trading which is based in Mandaue city.

The enchanting pearl jewelry of Keshie by Kay Larrauri was also at the show, laid on rose petals. “These are made with choice imported materials,” discloses the jeweler. Various hues of pearl necklaces and other accessories were a welcomed eye candy, as their neighboring shop displayed their treasures-cum-jewelry as well.

The venue provided al fresco dining with a choice to enjoy a meal with or without some entertainment. A mixture of locals and expatriates were in attendance, taking advantage of the shopping and dining experience the Cebu Night Market offers. The atmosphere was laid back and cool from the late afternoon rain. From afar, I could tell this was more than merely eating out, as the people here got to commune with their acquaintances, friends and family over some music and a variety of good food.
