POC snubs BAP, goes direct to Fiba By Frank C. Calapre Sun.Star Correspondent
MANILA – The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) yesterday rejected the request of former senator Joey Lina for a temporary reinstatement of the expelled Basketball Association of the Philippines (PBA), and instead asked the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) that it be allowed to hold the basketball tournament in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games.
“POC will lead this effort and it is our view that this is consistent with the provision of the MOU signed in Geneva last September. Of course, we will have to obtain the concurrence of the POC General Assembly should Fiba grant us a favorable response,” Aventajado told Baumann in his letter to the Fiba.
“We have already started this process and POC, as the lead organization, is extremely confident that the new federation will come to fruition before the deadline of March 31, 2006,” Aventajado continued. “There is, however, a short-term issue, which is the SEA Games. But the POC is actively and creatively trying to address the clamor of our countrymen for basketball in the SEA Games.”
On the other hand, Lina has signed the “declaration of unity and commitment” representing the BAP with the Philippine Basketball League (PBL), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) to declare unity and commitment in line with the condition of Fiba so that the suspension on the Philippines can be lifted before the 11-nation biennial meet.
Lina, the NCAA, the UAAP, the PBL and the PBA are the basketball stakeholders mentioned in the MOU with Fiba.
But sources said Cojuangco rejected the declaration because he only wanted Lina and not the expelled BAP in the new basketball federation that will be formed.
