Purefoods’ stars bag PBA citations

After their successive heart-stopping victories in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Fiesta Conference, the Purefoods Chunkee Giants completed a grand slam of sorts after two their key players were chosen co-Best Players of the Week for Oct. 9 - 16 by the PBA Press Corps.

The two Giants chosen to receive the awards are Kerby Raymundo and James Yap, who are touted as the future of the team in the post-Alvin Patrimonio era.

Gregorio said that the two’s heads up basketball play can be attributed to their recent stint with the national training pool.
“Kerby is our new spiritual leader, while James is undoubtedly playing inspired basketball these days,” Gregorio said.

Overtime

During the weekend, the Giants rallied from 29 points down to upend Alaska Milk, 86-84, in overtime and two days later, they were at it again as they wiped out a six-point San Miguel lead in the last two minutes of regulation to prevail, 92-90.

“I like the college attitude being displayed by my players. That’s what I am trying to instill,” he said.

Against the Aces, Raymundo tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block. Fighting the Beermen, he was good for 21 points, seven boards, two assists, a steal and a pair of swats.

Against SMB

On the other hand, Yap had 15 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals against Alaska and then had 12 points, six rebounds, an assist and two steals in the SMB win.

In four games, Raymundo averaged 15.5 points, 8.75 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.75 blocks in 36.25 minutes while Yap, a sophomore, normed 16.5 points, 5.25 rebounds, two assists and 1.75 steals in 36.5 minutes.

“I’m pretty sure that the PBA fans would like to see good old college spirit being displayed on the hardcourt. Raymundo and Yap are not the only ones playing their hearts out for us, the entire squad is doing this,” said Gregorio. (JSV)
